I have had quite an involvement with the University of Queensland. I finished a Science degree (in biological science) at the University of Queensland in 1974. The Federal Government provided free university fees in that era compared to the Hex fee arrangements which are part of the Federal Government’s policy now. We drove cars to University or we hitchhiked there which was very common. There were no mobile phones and no Internet (therefore no e-mailing or websites) ….. they had not been invented.
I was out there in July 2008 as my son Anthony was doing a degree there and had been living down river at West End near the Brisbane River. He would catch the CityCat which picked up the students from the West End Ferry Terminal and took them up the river to University Of Queensland Terminal. The University is five minutes up the hill where you enter near the Student Union Buildings ….. See the Website for the CityCat service. The new CityCat service now joins the whole of Brisbane by the River. The University had greatly changed since I was there in the early 1970’s with addition of lakes and parkland leading from the new Eleanor Schonell Bridge leading to the actual buildings of the University. See the photos below.

….. Brisbane’s new Eleanor Schonell Bridge is Australia’s first pedestrian, cycle and bus bridge. The A$55 million bridge is designed to carry buses, cyclists, pedestrians and emergency service vehicles. Eleanor Schonell, after whom the bridge was named, was a noted teacher, academic and author. She did pioneering work with disabled children which established an international reputation for the University of Queensland.

…… the view over the third lake with the reflections of trees and clouds ……..
…… Ibis feeding on the edges of the third lake ….
…… Wood ducks feeding in the grass beside the lakes …. These ducks are often in groups of two or three ducks. They waddle across the land generally amongst the taller grass but here it is mown grass. They are looking for insects and things to eat. They do not normally swim in the water of ponds as black ducks often do.
See the website: Images for australian wood duck.
